Thanks to the extreme weather, garden season has started early this year.\u00a0 That means it\u2019s time for me to pull out my weapons of mass destruction and pump myself up to start my annual killing spree.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m going to be planting peas, which most people might see as a positive thing.\u00a0 Thoreau, for example, said he worked to make the earth say \u201cbeans!\u201d instead of \u201cweeds!\u201d and that\u2019s a good thing, isn\u2019t it? \u00a0But because I like to follow Thoreau\u2019s best <\/em>advice, which is “to live deliberately,”\u00a0I never forget\u00a0that for every pea I grow, some other poor plant, worm, bug, or microorganism is going to have to die.<\/p>\n Failing to keep this balance in mind is, I believe, how we modern Americans have gotten ourselves into so much trouble. We easily see our positive goals, such as providing cheap water to a large city, but we fail to see how every action we take has negative consequences as well\u2014such as cheap water is often filled with lead. So when I go out to my garden, I am\u00a0very aware\u00a0that I\u2019m not just planting peas–I\u2019m interfering with the Natural World.\u00a0 In order for me to get what I want, something else is going to have\u00a0to die.<\/p>\n It may sound as if\u00a0I dwell on the negative. I don\u2019t. I dwell on Balance<\/em>, because that\u2019s the only way to curb my homicidal tendencies.
